Phainon — Honkai Star Rail Character Guide
Physical Destruction DPS · MoC T0.5 · PF T1 · AS T0.5
Overview
Solo hypercarry who transforms into Khaslana for 8 enhanced turns with 75% DMG reduction, death immunity, and massive multipliers. Designed for sustainless triple-amplifier play that ends fights in 1-2 transformations before allies run out of resources.
Solo hypercarry Destruction DPS who transforms into Khaslana via Ultimate, deploying a Territory that removes all allies from the field and grants all enemies Physical Weakness. Manages 12-point Coreflame resource (gained when targeted by any ability) to enter an 8-turn transformation with massive ATK and Max HP multipliers, 75% DMG reduction, death immunity, and CC immunity. During transformation, alternates between Enhanced W Skill (Taunt + Counter) and Enhanced E Skill (Meteor) to deal Physical DMG with extreme multipliers.
Key Mechanics
- Coreflame generation depends on being targeted by abilities — each ally Skill, Ultimate, advance, or Energy grant targeting Phainon provides 1 Coreflame. Action advance supports (Sunday, Bronya) are optimal because each advance both generates Coreflame and accelerates Phainon's own turn for more Skill uses.
- Ally Action Value is frozen during transformation — allies return with the same AV they had when they departed. This enables optimization with Robin's Ultimate or Dance! Dance! Dance! to set ally AV to 0 before transformation, so allies act immediately when it ends.
- Buffs applied to Phainon before or during transformation do not tick down during extra turns — short-duration buffs from Bronya (1 turn) persist for the entire 8-turn transformation. This is because extra turns have the property of not decrementing buff counters.
- All Enhanced E Skill (Meteor) and Final Hit damage is distributed evenly across all enemies. Against multiple targets, individual damage per enemy decreases proportionally. This makes Phainon strongest in single-target or low-enemy-count encounters.
- Enhanced W Skill (Taunt) advances all enemies immediately. While 75% DMG reduction makes this safe in most cases, it can trigger dangerous boss mechanics or counter-attacks. In encounters with 3+ enemies, alternating Taunt and Meteor is the strongest rotation since Taunt generates Scourge equal to enemy count.
Best Teams for Phainon
Sustainless Triple Amplifier
Triple amplifier setup with no sustain for maximum offense. Phainon self-heals 20% Max HP per attack during transformation, has 75% DMG reduction in Soulscorch state, and death immunity triggers a Final Hit instead of a knockout. This natural tankiness makes him self-sufficient in short fights. The Chrysos combo of Cyrene plus Cerydra provides Meteor duplication and massive stat buffs, with the flex slot going to RMC, Tribbie, or Cipher.

Double Advance with Sustain
Sunday and Bronya dual advance with a sustain for longer encounters. Two action advancers generate Coreflame extremely efficiently (each advance targets Phainon for a Coreflame and extends buff duration through transformation). A sustain in the fourth slot allows survival across 2-3 transformations where sustainless teams run out of ally resources.

Apocalyptic Shadow Break
For Apocalyptic Shadow's longer, sustained encounters, Phainon benefits from a sustain and Break support. Ruan Mei is crucial here because AS scoring revolves around Weakness Breaks — Phainon's enormous Toughness DMG multipliers amplify Break Efficiency and RES Shred directly. A persistent sustain handles the extended fight length that sustainless setups cannot manage.

Investment Priority
- LC S1 — Signature provides highest base ATK in game (687), permanent 18% DEF ignore, and massive DMG% buff during transformation. Substantial damage increase over free alternatives.
- E1 — Stepping stone toward E2. SPD inheritance increase improves action count during transformation; 50% CRIT DMG buff on Ultimate activation is a noticeable boost.
- E2 — Best stopping point for spenders. 20% Physical RES PEN during transformation and an extra turn per Meteor use. In Pure Fiction enables 14 consecutive turns by alternating Taunt and Meteor infinitely.

Important Notes
- Extremely reliant on strong relics (90%+ CRIT Rate, 160%+ CRIT DMG) — stat-check DPS that punishes weak builds more than most characters.
- Allies cannot act during transformation and cannot regenerate Energy. After 2-3 Ultimates, supports may lack Energy or HP to sustain another cycle.
- Damage distributes evenly across all enemies — awkward against encounters with low-priority adds that divert Meteor bounces away from the main target.
- Enhanced W Skill advances enemy actions — can trigger dangerous boss mechanics or counters if used carelessly.
- Being alone during Ultimate means some bosses change behavior or hit count mechanics become impossible to satisfy, potentially enabling their invulnerability phases.
