Gepard — Honkai Star Rail Character Guide
Ice Preservation Sustain · MoC T4 · PF T4 · AS T4
Overview
Shield-based sustain with teamwide protection and self-revive. Strong unconditional shields scale with DEF and cover all allies for 3 turns. Fully SP-positive with low investment floor, but has no healing — any damage through shields is permanent.
DEF-scaling Preservation shielder who applies teamwide shields via Ultimate and draws enemy aggro passively. Shield absorption scales with DEF (45% DEF + 600 at max level) and lasts 3 turns with only 100 Energy cost, enabling near-permanent uptime. Fully SP-positive since shields come from Ultimate, not Skill. Has a one-time self-revive Talent and limited single-target Freeze utility on Skill.
Key Mechanics
- Shields are the sole form of sustain — Gepard cannot heal allies. Any damage that penetrates or exceeds shields is permanent HP loss. Teams must kill enemies before attrition becomes fatal.
- Low 100 Energy Ultimate cost with Energy Regen Rope enables near-permanent shield uptime on a 2-3 turn cycle. Energy reduction mechanics from enemies or Apocalyptic Shadow debuffs directly threaten shield rotation.
- Innate taunt from A2 (Integrity) + Preservation path aggro bonus makes Gepard the primary attack target. This protects squishier allies but means Gepard absorbs the most damage — his own shields must be strong enough to survive focus fire.
- DoT effects (Burn, Bleed, Shock, Wind Shear) tick directly through shields to HP. Gepard teams are vulnerable to DoT-heavy enemies without a secondary healer.
- Freeze utility on Skill (65% base chance at E0) is unreliable against endgame enemies with 40% Effect RES. At E1 (100% base chance) with 67% Effect Hit Rate, real Freeze chance reaches ~100% against standard enemies.
Best DPS Pairings
Arlan (A), Yanqing (A)
Investment Priority
- E1 — Raises Freeze base chance to 100% — enables reliable crowd control in DoT teams and freeze-tech compositions. Most impactful stopping point if using Freeze utility.
- E4 — +20% Effect RES to all allies passively. Meaningful team-wide debuff resistance with no activation requirement. Good quality-of-life stopping point on the way to E6.
- LC S1 — Journey S5 is the stronger practical option, but MoV S1 provides strong DEF scaling and taunt for Trend LC setups. Only invest in signature if targeting Trend Acheron composition.
Best Relics
Recommended: self-enshrouded-recluse with broken-keel
Stat targets: DEF 2400-2700+, SPD 134+, Effect Hit Rate 67% (E1 Freeze), Effect RES 30%+ (Broken Keel)
Main stats: Body: DEF% / Effect Hit Rate · Feet: SPD · Sphere: DEF% · Rope: Energy Regen
Important Notes
- No healing — any damage penetrating shields is permanent HP loss. Team must kill enemies before shieldless attrition becomes fatal.
- Low base SPD (92) requires Speed boots and substats to reach 134 SPD breakpoint for 2 actions per cycle. Without this, shield uptime gaps occur.
- Energy reduction mechanics (some AS buffs, enemy debuffs) heavily impact shield uptime since everything depends on Ultimate frequency. Energy Regen Rope is mandatory.
- DoT damage ticks through shields directly to HP — shields do not block Burn, Bleed, Shock, or Wind Shear. Weak against DoT-heavy enemies without healing backup.
- Freeze at E0 has only 65% base chance (roughly 25% real chance vs 40% Effect RES). Do not rely on Freeze utility without E1.
